5th grade parents! Starting in 6th grade, your student has the amazing opportunity to join our band program. Not only will your student gain a formal music education, but they will also learn important skills that go along with being in a band that they will need for the rest of their life: discipline, grit, dedication, and teamwork. Tomorrow, students will be competing in our House Competition and will engage in a character study within their house chapters. Students are encouraged to wear their house shirts tomorrow. Also, in honor of World Down Syndrome Awareness day, our students will be rocking their socks and can earn extra house points tomorrow for wearing mix matched socks. Finally, SGCMS would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Jennifer McCallister, who graciously donated equipment to the middle school for this month's House Competition.

Recently, 39 SGCMS students participated in the Perennial Math competition, offered to students from across the United States. We were pleased to have several top scorers.

Next week Best Buddies will be selling socks Monday through Thursday during lunch for Rock your Socks Day (3/21). They will be $5 and will benefit The West Tennessee Down Syndrome Association and SGCMS Best Buddies.
Those who participate in Rock your Rocks will also earn extra points for their House Groups!
Everyone is encouraged to wear their socks on 3/21.

We are so proud of them!

Parents, if your student is going to the high school state championship game this morning, to be considered an excused absence they must check in with Shelby, Fisher or Tish McGhee at the game.

Recently, Shelby Mathis from 9 Round Kickboxing Fitness visited students to speak about her career path. Mrs. Mathis is the mother of 7th grade student Reed Kee. She spoke about her background that includes careers at the Gibson County Chamber of Commerce, the Jackson Exchange Club, and at 9 Round Kickboxing Fitness, which she owns. She encouraged students to focus on relationships and diversification. We appreciate community partners that spend time reaching out to our learners.

Engineering has been a focus of study in 7th grade Career Exploration this quarter. In order for students to learn more about the field of engineering, guest speakers from JEA (Jackson Energy Authority) shared about their jobs in Civil, Electrical, and Mechanical engineering. Speakers included Mr. Will Deaton, Mr. Myles Gibson, and Kurtis Crowder. Thank you to JEA for teaching our students about this exciting career path.
